FORT WORTH - A Fort Worth man and woman were returning home
from a Christmas party Saturday night on East Loop 820 when they were struck
head-on by a car driven by man whom police later arrested on suspicion of
intoxication manslaughter. James Heath Newcomb, 39, and his companion of five
years, Carol Ann Hood, 39, both died of injuries after their southbound Honda
Civic was struck head-on about 10:30 p.m. by a northbound Mazda 626, police
said. Test results show that James Earl Rice Jr. was not legally drunk Saturday
night, as police originally believed, when he was arrested after the head-on
collision, but police are holding him on suspicion of criminal
negligent homicide.
